Congresswoman Nancy Pelosi

Pelosi Statement on 30th Anniversary of Roe v. Wade

January 22, 2003

Washington, D.C. -- House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi issued the following statement today on the 30th anniversary of Roe v. Wade, the Supreme Court decision recognizing a woman’s right to choose:

“Today we observe the 30th anniversary of Roe v. Wade, the landmark Supreme Court decision that affirmed women’s reproductive freedom. Since the decision, women have fought for a generation to preserve that freedom and the dignity of being able to make their own reproductive choices.

“While this is an occasion for celebration, it is also one for grave concern. With anti-choice leaders in control of the White House and the Congress, we will see an unprecedented effort to overturn a woman’s right to choose. Every anti-choice bill that is introduced in Congress could be another stone paving the road to the outright reversal of Roe.

“We must be vigilant and continue to fight for a woman’s right to choose, and also for a broad range of reproductive options, including family planning, contraception, and healthy childbearing. We must not let President Bush and the anti-choice lawmakers forget that a majority of Americans believe that decisions about whether to have a child does not and should not rest with the government. A woman in consultation with her family, her doctor, and her clergy is best qualified to make that decision.”
