Pelosi: Republican Tax Breaks Leave Millions of Kids Behind

May 29, 2003

Washington, D.C. -- House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement about today’s front-page story in The New York Times that the Republican tax bill, signed into law yesterday, excludes working families from receiving an increased child tax credit:

“The Times story reinforces what Democrats have been saying all along - the tax cut package is not fair and will not help working families.

“While the Republicans tax break leaves no business behind, it leaves behind millions of children from working poor families. Faced with a choice between giving a tax break to an elite few or helping millions of working families, the Republicans once again chose to help their wealthy friends.

“Not only does the Republican tax package not help working families, it also falls short in creating jobs because working families would spend the money immediately, boosting the economy.”
