Congresswoman Nancy Pelosi

Pelosi: Statement on Passage of House Republican Medicare Prescription Drug Bill

June 26, 2003

Washington, D.C. -- House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement tonight after the passage of the House Republican Medicare prescription drug bill by a vote of 216-215-1:

"Seniors want and deserve a Medicare prescription drug benefit that is guaranteed, affordable, and available to all seniors and disabled Americans. That’s what House Democrats are working for.

"There are many unanswered questions about the Republican bill, but there’s one question that every American should ask: Why do the Republicans prohibit negotiating for the best possible Medicare prescription drug prices?

"Why? Because this has been a debate between the special interests and the public interest. The Democrats have come to this debate as servants of the people. The Republicans have come as handmaidens of the prescription drug industry. Sadly, tonight, the special interests won."
