Miller will lead the policy arm of the Committee and will be responsible for working with his Democratic colleagues to develop Democratic policy initiatives and strategy in the House of Representatives.
"George Miller brings to this job enormous intelligence, experience, passion, and the ability to articulate a clear vision of what Congress must do to help our country," said Pelosi. "I look forward to working with him to help us utilize the many talents in the Democratic Caucus on behalf of all Americans."
The Democratic Policy Committee will help formulate distinct Democratic legislative initiatives that will make the Democratic message to the American people crystal clear.
"We support initiatives that are fair to every American, build a strong economy, create opportunity, encourage innovation, offer compassion, and safeguard the security of our nation," said Miller. "The American people began to hear our message at the start of this year through the release of the Democratic economic stimulus plan, in contrast to the economic plan offered by President Bush. We will build on that success in areas from national defense to health care, retirement security, education, the environment, and economic growth.
As Nancy Pelosi has said many times, Democrats will work together with Republicans when we can agree with each other on the right direction for our country. But when we see policies from the President and the Republican leadership in Congress that work to undermine the economic and social strength of this nation, we will speak out clearly and forcefully to reject those plans and offer viable alternatives to better our nation."
Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro of Connecticut will continue to serve as co-chair of the Democratic Steering and Policy Committee, leading the steering arm of the Committee.
Miller, who co-chaired the Democratic Policy Committee in 1995 and 1996 at the request of then-Democratic leader Richard Gephardt of Missouri, has been a prolific legislator during his years in Congress. He is serving his second term as senior Democrat on the Committee on Education and the Workforce, and served for a decade as chairman and then senior Democrat on the Committee on Resources (1991-2000). He also served on the Budget Committee and was the founding chairman of the Select Committee on Children, Youth and Families (1983 to 1990). He has represented the 7th district of California (Contra Costa and Solano Counties) since 1975.
Miller has been a leading legislator in areas such as elementary and secondary education, child welfare, nutrition, water resources, national parks and forests, energy, and U.S. and international labor rights. He initiated the Pay As You Go budget plan that was successfully used to balance the budget in the 1990s.
