The environment is not just an issue. It is an ethic. It is a matter of justice. It is a civil right, said Pelosi upon receiving the award. I thank the California League of Conservation voters for this great honor. Because of you, our Golden State has led the way, making environmental history, again and again.
Pelosi was selected to receive this award for her leadership on environmental issues throughout her 16-year career in the House of Representatives. These include the conversion of the San Francisco Presidio from a military post to a public park, thereby preserving the park for public use; her work to include the The Pelosi amendment in the International Development and Finance Act of 1989, requiring banks to review the potential environmental impacts of development projects for which they provide funding; and her ongoing efforts in the areas of environmental health and justice.
Our children deserve a safe and healthy environment, Pelosi commented. Every child has a right to clean air to breathe! Every child has a right to clean water to drink! And every child - especially poor children who live near health hazards - has a right to be born into an environment free of deadly pollutants and toxic waste!
As House Democratic Leader, I promise you: protecting our children and our environment is a top priority, continued Pelosi. Sadly, others have a different priority. Quickly and quietly in the dark of night, the Bush Administration and the Republican majority in Congress are rolling back 30 years of bipartisan environmental progress and protections.
The CLCV is a non- partisan, non-profit organization dedicated to political
action in Californias environmental movement. Past recipients of this
award include President Bill Clinton, U.S. Senators Dianne Feinstein and John
Kerry and California Attorney General Bill Lockyer.
