Pelosi: House Democrats Stop Floor Action to Protest Republicans' Failure to Fix the Child Tax Credit

June 3, 2003

Washington, D.C. -- House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi today blasted House Republicans for failing to fix the child tax credit for working families. Rep. Charles Rangel (D-NY) and other Democratic members today announced legislation (H.R. 2286) to ensure that the working parents of 19 million children receive the increased child tax credit that Republicans denied them in the tax bill. House Democrats protested Republicans’ business as usual practice of not allowing debate by voting down two bills on the suspension calendar.

“It is unconscionable that House Republicans refuse to provide a child tax credit for America’s working families. Republicans' priorities are clear: the interests of their wealthy friends are more important than those of millions of children and families who would benefit from the child tax credit extension.

“The Republican leadership is trying to silence Democratic voices on the House floor. We will do whatever it takes to force Republicans to fix the child tax credit.

“Unbelievably, under the unfair Republican tax bill passed last month, many of our young men and women returning from the Persian Gulf are not eligible for the child tax credit. Our plan extends the credit to these brave men and women who served in combat.

“Time and time again, this President and his Republican allies in Congress act against those who need help the most -- working families. Whether it is excluding them from the child tax credit, delaying unemployment insurance, or eliminating overtime pay, Republicans are taking money out of the wallets of working parents. With this legislation, House Democrats are demanding that we put the needs of working families first.”
