WASHINGTON, D.C. -- House Democratic Leader-Elect Nancy Pelosi released the following statement at a press conference this afternoon about the two-day House Democratic economic forum that ends today:
"With this economic forum, Democrats have taken the first step today toward diagnosing what ails our economy and laid the foundation for an economic plan that promotes growth and creates jobs in a way that is fair and is fiscally responsible.
"The Democratic plan will be a real alternative to the failed economic policies of the Bush Administration.
"Our economic stimulus package will be fast-acting and targeted to those who need it -- working families and small businesses. It will also recognize that what we do in Washington has serious implications for state budgets, which are in perilous condition because of the weak economy.
"And our stimulus plan will not risk another breakdown tomorrow. We will
consider tax cuts that are fiscally responsible and that provide relief to those
working families and businesses who are most vulnerable during an economic downturn."
