Representative Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) has been named Legislator of the Month by the Population Institute for her commitment to population stabilization and to international family planning.
The award was presented to Rep. Pelosi Wednesday night at the Population Institute in Washington, D.C.. As a Member of the Foreign Operations Appropriations Subcommittee, Representative Pelosi has championed the cause of population stabilization and funding for international family planning and the United Nations Population Fund.
As Ranking Democratic Member of the Foreign Operations Subcommittee, Rep. Pelosi recently led the successful attempt to gain House passage for a resolution allowing the release of international family planning funds on March 1, after a Presidential finding determined that the delay of the release of these funds was having an adverse impact on the population planning program.
The Population Institute is the largest private, non-profit organization working exclusively for a more equitable balance between the earth's population, resources and environment. The Legislator of the Month award is given on a bipartisan basis to lawmakers who show leadership in bringing population into balance with environment and resource needs.
