Rep. Pelosi Calls for Campaign Finance Reform Now

We are here today as Democratic Women of the House to urge immediate action on comprehensive campaign finance reform. At the beginning of this Congress, more than 100 Members sent a bipartisan letter to the Speaker requesting that campaign finance reform legislation be considered within the first 100 days. The answer has been a resounding silence.

President Clinton has spoken out clearly in favor of a Campaign Finance Reform Bill Now. The Democratic leaders in the House and Senate eagerly await floor debate on campaign finance reform.

We have no more time to waste on this issue. It has been estimated that a total of $2.5 billion was spent on the 1996 elections. Polls show that 92% of the American public thinks that is too much money spent on campaigns and reform is needed now.

We can go on with business as usual and lose the last thread of credibility that remains with the American public, or we can act immediately and decisively to limit campaign spending. I join with my colleagues today in urging swift action on campaign finance reform legislation.
