Pelosi Announces
$2.2 million for Redevelopment of Hunters Point Shipyard
October
6, 2003
San Francicso,
CA - House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) announced today
$2.2 million in new federal funds to assist the City and County
of San Francisco with critical infrastructure improvements for the
redevelopment of the Hunters Point Naval Shipyard. Pelosi secured
these funds in the FY 2004 Department of Defense Appropriations
Act signed by the president on September 30, 2003.
These
funds bring us a step closer to realizing long-held dreams for the
Bayview Hunters Point community - of a safe environment, of economic
opportunity, and renewed community, said Pelosi.
Congresswoman
Pelosi also supported the Navy's request for $27 million to cleanup
the shipyard in keeping with the Federal Facilities Agreement schedule.
These funds will help ensure that the property is cleaned up and
transferred on a timely basis, so that much-needed, long-awaited
economic development can commence. This is the fifth year in a row
that Pelosi has secured funds for the clean up and transfer of Hunters
Point Naval Shipyard to the City and County of San Francisco.
I commend
those members of the Bayview Hunters Point community who have partnered
with the Navy and the City and County of San Francisco to move this
process forward, added Pelosi. Their contributions will
help guarantee that the Shipyard is handed over to the people of
the Bayview as a clean, safe place for this and future generations.
