Pelosi Applauds Supreme Court Decision Striking Down Texas Discrimination Law

June 26, 2003

Washington, D.C. -- House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement today regarding the U.S. Supreme Court’s ruling that struck down a Texas law that discrimated against gays and lesbians:

“The Supreme Court ruling this morning was a victory for privacy in America. I applaud the decision because it affirms that all Americans, including gays and lesbians, are entitled to privacy under our Constitution, and in the words of the Court, to ‘retain their dignity as free persons.’

“This ruling reversed the egregious Bowers v. Hardwick decision of 1986 that had been used to discriminate against lesbians and gays, and to justify taking away their children and denying them employment.

“While today’s decision is heartening, I was very disappointed in Justice Scalia's offensive comments on the ruling. They are beneath the dignity of the Court."
