Pelosi: Republicans Break Promise to America’s Veterans

July 25, 2003

Washington, D.C. -- House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement after Republicans broke their pledge on veterans’ health care funding by passing the VA-HUD appropriations bill. The bill contains $1.8 billion less than what was promised in the Republican budget for veterans’ health care.

“Another day in the House of Representatives and another broken promise by Republicans -- this time to veterans on health care.

“The veterans health care system is in crisis. Veterans are waiting six months or more for a medical appointment at Veterans Administration hospitals; the health care system is failing to serve the needs of our veterans; and an average of 200,000 veterans are on a waiting list to receive healthcare. How do Republicans respond? By drastically under funding veterans’ health care funding by $1.8 billion.

“President Bush and House Republicans owe it to the men and women who defended our country to keep the promise of the health care they deserve and have earned.

“Democrats fought to increase funding for veterans’ health care at every opportunity. We offered amendment after amendment to increase veterans’ health care funding, but Republicans repeatedly defeated these measures.

“We must fulfill our promise to those who have paid the high price for our freedom -- those who have worn our nation’s uniform.”
