Pelosi: GOP Assault on Children Continues with Dismantling of Head Start

July 16, 2003

Washington, D.C. -- House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement this afternoon on Republican plans to dismantle Head Start:

"Instead of trying to strengthen Head Start, Republicans are trying to dismantle it. It is yet another in a long line of Republican assaults on children -- from under funding education, to denying the child tax credit to millions of working families, and now an attempt to destroy Head Start.

"Republicans know that parents and teachers will not tolerate killing Head Start with one blow, so they have begun a death by a thousand cuts. That is shameful and grossly unfair to the children who need Head Start.

"There is no doubt that Head Start works -- it involves parents to make sure children get the education and the medical treatment they need.

"Investing in our children is the best investment we can make. Head Start is an extraordinarily effective way to do so.

"Democrats want to expand access to Head Start to all eligible preschoolers, improve the flexibility of Head Start programs to meet community needs, maintain the commitment to parental involvement, and fully fund it.

"It is sad that we have to fight on the House floor to keep an incredibly successful preschool program, but fight we will. We will not let Republicans kill Head Start."
