Nominates Lampson as Ranking Member of the Subcommittee on Space and Aeronautics

January 6, 2004

Washington, D.C. -- House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi today announced that she would nominate Congressman Charlie Gonzalez of Texas to serve on the House Committee on Energy and Commerce.

"I am pleased to submit Charlie Gonzalez’s name to the Democratic Steering Committee, chaired by Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro," Pelosi said. "Charlie will be a strong voice on the Committee for consumers and joins a proud tradition of Texans serving on the Energy and Commerce Committee. Charlie is an extremely talented Member, and he will be an outstanding addition to the Committee."

The Energy and Commerce Committee is a key committee with broad jurisdiction over telecommunications, consumer protection, food and drug safety, public health, air quality and environmental health, the supply and delivery of energy, and interstate and foreign commerce.

Gonzalez, a moderate Democrat, would be the first Hispanic Member of Congress from Texas to serve on the Committee. He brings his experience on telecommunications issues as a member of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus’ Technology and Telecommunications Task Force, where he has worked on increasing diversity in the broadcasting and telecommunications industries as well as expanding access to information technology for schools and libraries. In addition, Gonzalez has a strong commitment to public health.

Pelosi also announced that she would nominate Congressman Nick Lampson of Texas to serve as the Ranking Democrat on the House Committee on Science's Subcommittee on Space and Aeronautics.

"Nick is an expert on science and aeronautics policy and has been a strong advocate for the Johnson Space Center and the entire NASA manned space program," Pelosi said. "He will make an outstanding Ranking Member, and future chairman, of the Space and Aeronautics Subcommittee."
