Pelosi: ‘We Will Fight to the Finish for Texas’

January 6, 2004

Washington, D.C. -- House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement today after a three-judge federal panel upheld a new congressional map for Texas:

"Today’s decision undermines the Voting Rights Act by disadvantaging not only the 3.6 million Hispanics and African Americans in Texas, but minority Americans across the country, whose voting rights will no longer be protected by federal law. This is just the latest attempt by President Bush, Tom DeLay, and other Republicans to dismantle the Voting Rights Act that has protected the rights of minority voters for 40 years.

"The Texas redistricting plan shows once again that when Republicans cannot win elections fair and square, they rig the rules. That is a disservice to Texans and all Americans who value our democracy.

"This decision will be immediately appealed to the U.S. Supreme Court. We will fight to the finish for Texas.

"Regardless of the outcome of the appeal, Democrats in Texas have won difficult campaigns in competitive districts in the past and will again this year. They are extremely talented and valuable to their state, to the Congress, and to the entire country. We will do everything we can to re-elect all our Democratic Members."
