Pelosi: House Republicans “Delayed” Energy Modernization and the Lights Went Out

August 15, 2003

Washington, D.C. - House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi today released the following statement on the power blackout:

“We have long known that the energy transmission system in this country was over burdened and becoming less reliable. Time and time again House Democrats have proposed modernizing the transmission system and making it more reliable and Republicans blocked each attempt.

“President Bush and Tom DeLay put the interests of the energy companies before the interests of the American people by insisting we drill in ANWR and other environmentally sensitive areas rather than modernize our energy system.

“The West Coast energy crisis was a wake-up call on energy modernization, the blackout is a blaring siren. President Bush should call on Republicans to work with House Democrats to modernize our transition system.”
