Commemorating Labor Day
Each Labor Day, we celebrate the hard-working women and men who are the backbone of our country. Working people are the foundation of America’s strength, and as we honor them we also pay tribute to the labor movement that has led progress for hard-working families across our history.
The Mayor of Castro Street
Harvey Milk’s courageous, trailblazing leadership stands as one of the great beacons of progress of our country. This week, I had the privilege of joining U.S. Navy Secretary Ray Mabus at the ship-naming ceremony of one of our newest Navy oiler ships: the USNS Harvey Milk.
Love Conquers Hate
Two months ago, an act of unfathomable hate claimed 49 lives at Pulse nightclub in Orlando. Yesterday, it was my somber privilege to meet with survivors and the family members of those who lost their lives, and to lay flowers at the makeshift memorial outside Pulse.
This past week I had the distinct honor to lead a Congressional delegation to both Italy and Afghanistan. In both countries, our discussions were focused around shared diplomacy, climate change, human rights, counterterrorism, and ways in which we can make the international economy accessible and fair for everyone.
A Moral Responsibility
In the United States of America – the greatest nation on earth – one in five children go to sleep hungry. Nearly 140,000 San Franciscans are food insecure every day, and many of them are children, seniors, and veterans. In our city over 50,000 people from all walks of life rely on food stamps to make it through the month.
A Community Rich in Culture
Our city and our country has benefitted greatly from the beautiful cultures, monumental achievements, and rich contributions that Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders (AAPI) have made to the fabric of our nation.
San Francisco leads the nation in creating new, trailblazing technology – and we want to maintain our competitive edge. That’s why I was delighted to join other Bay Area Members of Congress in hosting an Innovation Agenda 2.0 listening session with local technology leaders from across our region.
