The BP oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico is the worst environmental disaster in American history. New estimates from scientists show more than 1 million gallons of oil are leaking from the broken pipe each day threatening the local economies of coastal communities, as well as the Gulf statesâ€™ wildlife refuges and marine sanctuaries.
Last night, the House passed a landmark amendment to the National Defense Authorization Act that calls for a repeal of the discriminatory â€œDonâ€™t Ask, Donâ€™t Tellâ€ policy. It acknowledges the tens of thousands of lesbian, gay, and bisexual service members who serve honorably in our military, and finally allows them to do so openly and without fear of prejudice or persecution.
Last Saturday, I had the privilege of touring the Maxine Hall Health Center, a community health center serving the Western Addition community in San Francisco. This health center successfully meets the needs of a diverse population â€“ eliminating barriers of language and location through telemedicine and translation, and increasing access to quality care as a right and not a privilege.
