Jun 8, 2015 Pelosi Update
LGBT Americans have long been on the frontlines in the fight for equality for all Americans. In commemorating LGBT Pride Month throughout June, we honor courageous citizens who combat injustice and recommit our efforts to creating a stronger, more inclusive democracy. We recognize our shared progress to ensure equality for LGBT Americans – in Congress to the Supreme Court, from state legislatures to local courthouses – by remaining vigilant in confronting bigotry and remaining hopeful for a better future for all people, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity.

Honoring Our Heritage

May 22, 2015 Pelosi Update
House Republicans are threatening to devastate our nation’s commitment to science and innovation with their ill-conceived COMPETES Act, which is an assault on science and a plan to surrender American leadership. Instead of investing in research and development, this bill slashes funding for essential initiatives in the National Science Foundation, the National Institute of Standards and Technology, and Department of Energy research. It attempts to silence the climate, environmental and social science that conservatives in Congress don’t want to hear.

On Tuesday, we were reminded of the rich and diverse immigrant heritage that is the heart of our country. Immigration is the constant reinvigoration of America, and each generation of immigrants makes America more American. Every May 5th has served as an opportunity to honor the proud history of our Mexican neighbors, and to celebrate the generations of contributions that Mexican Americans and all Hispanic Americans have made to the United States and specifically to San Francisco.

This week, I was proud to join with Department of Labor Secretary Thomas Perez and Democratic Members to unveil the Raise the Wage Act by Senator Patty Murray and Congressman Bobby Scott. The legislation would raise the federal minimum wage to $12 by 2020 and tie future minimum wage increases to increases in the median wage in order to account for inflation.

Earth Day reminds us of the vital role we must play in protecting the world’s wildlife, public lands, air and water for the next generation. For the past forty-five years, April 22 has served as a clarion call to fulfill our shared responsibility of shaping a healthier future. ‘It’s Our Turn to Lead’ is more than the theme of this year’s events, it is a challenge to confront the climate crisis, practice conservation and cultivate the promise of clean energy. By protecting our environment and pursuing cleaner technologies, we can meet the challenges we face.

It is simply wrong that 52 years after President John F. Kennedy signed the Equal Pay Act into law, there is still a pay gap between women and men in America. Tuesday was Equal Pay Day, which symbolizes when, more than three months into the year, women’s wages finally catch up to what men were paid in the previous year.

Groundbreaking Growth
It was a pleasure to attend the groundbreaking of the Alice Griffith Housing Development this Wednesday. In this wonderful new part of the Candlestick Point and Hunters Point Shipyard area, we are taking steps to meet one of the most pressing challenges we face: affordable housing.

On Thursday, we celebrated the 88th birthday of the late farm labor movement leader, César Chávez, whose extraordinary leadership and commitment to justice continue to inspire civil rights movements in our country and around the world. Chávez galvanized the farmworkers’ movement to guarantee that workers who grew and picked the food that helped feed our nation could also provide for their own families.

Since its creation nearly 50 years ago, Medicare has represented a promise to the American people: that after a lifetime of work, seniors deserve the access to quality health care. This week, I was honored to join my colleagues inpassing historic bipartisan legislation by a vote of 392-37 to protect millions of seniors from losing access to their Medicare physicians.

Work Harder for Less?
Our budgets are nothing less than a statement of our values. The Republican Budget released this week makes their values clear: big tax breaks for the ultra-wealthy and no concern for the challenges faced by hardworking Americans.

Feb 9, 2015 Pelosi Update
As Americans await action from this Congress on issues that matter to middle class families, the Republican majority is still baying at the moon. This week, Congress took vote number 56 to repeal or undermine the Affordable Care Act – and strip health security from American families.

Six years ago this week, President Obama made the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act the first bill he signed into law, restoring the right of women and other workers to challenge pay discrimination in court. It was a landmark law – ensuring that the courthouse door was open for women seeking to fight discrimination.

At his State of the Union Address on Tuesday night, President Obama articulated a powerful vision of opportunity and prosperity for the working families of our country. The President was forward-looking, and boldly embraced the imperative to grow the wages and bolster the financial security of hard working Americans.
Jan 16, 2015 Pelosi Update
House Democrats unanimously opposed one Republican amendment that would deport the DREAMers, our nation’s aspiring Americans who came to this country as children. In this extreme, anti-immigrant amendment, resources would be diverted away from deporting felons and threats to our national security, instead tearing apart millions of hard working families.
Jan 10, 2015 Pelosi Update
On Tuesday, Members were sworn in to serve the 114th Congress in the House of Representatives, and I am honored to once again serve our nation in my capacity as the Democratic Leader, which would not have been possible without the strength and support of the people of San Francisco.
