Ending the Epidemic
Monday marks three years since the heartbreaking shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary. It has been a little more than 1,000 days since that attack. In that time, there have been more than 1,000 mass shootings -- almost one for each day.

Running out of Time
Once again, the total dysfunction of the Republican Congress has led the American people down a dangerous calendar of chaos. With only 6 legislative days to act to fully protect the full faith and credit of the United States by November 3, they squandered this week with empty ideological grandstanding.

On Wednesday, I toured the Robert B. Pitts public housing apartments in the Western Addition, the site of a HUD Rental Assistance Demonstration (RAD) rehabilitation project, with HUD Secretary Julián Castro, Mayor Ed Lee and Board of Supervisors President London Breed.

Calendar of Chaos
The total dysfunction of the Republican Congress is pushing hard-working families down a dangerous path. After a year of relentless obstruction and failed leadership, critical deadlines have piled up — threatening our economy and communities across the country.

During last week’s extraordinary address by His Holiness Pope Francis to a Joint Meeting of Congress, I was proud so many San Franciscans from across our city were able to join this historic event as my guests. Our many neighbors at the Capitol included University of San Francisco Chancellor Father Stephen Privett, climate advocates Tom and Kat Steyer, and labor leader Dolores Huerta – who gathered in fellowship with students from San Francisco studying at D.C.’s universities, parishioners invited from every Catholic parish in San Francisco to my own parish priest, Father Ken Westray and his family. We were all blessed to be a part of Pope Francis’ message of hope and dialogue of peace.

Yesterday, the Holy Father Pope Francis delivered an extraordinary address to Congress. With absolute clarity, beauty and moral urgency, Pope Francis called on all of us to be better stewards of Creation and instruments of God’s peace.

With only 5 legislative days until the budget deadline on September 30th, Republicans are growing louder and louder in their pledges to shut down the government to deny women access to comprehensive health care. Instead of joining Democrats at the table for bipartisan budget negotiations, Congress is spending this week advancing a new assault on women’s health. But the American people are loud and clear, too: they know our country can’t afford another misguided, unnecessary Government Shutdown.

Education is the most important investment that families can make in themselves and that a nation can make in its future. With the Kindergarten to College initiative, San Francisco is once more leading the way for the nation. This week, I visited a class of first graders at Monroe Elementary School in the Excelsior neighborhood who have a head start in saving for college through this unique program.

This week, America celebrated Women’s Equality Day, honoring the brave American suffragettes who reached for the ballot, demanded their civil rights, and altered the course of history. These pioneers challenged the status quo so women today can pull the lever for progress, and they forced open the doors of equality and justice so all could walk through them. On the 95th anniversary of the 19th Amendment, it has never been more clear thatwhen women succeed, America succeeds.

For the past quarter century, the Ryan White CARE Act has played a fundamental role in our nation’s struggle to treat and ultimately destroy HIV/AIDS. This legislation has provided an essential lifeline to Americans living with HIV/AIDS who lack the resources and coverage needed to cope with this devastating disease. As we reflect on the progress of the past 25 years, and on the courageous legacy of Ryan White himself, we rededicate ourselves to carrying out the mission of the Ryan White CARE Act – to finally banish HIV/AIDS to the history books.

For 80 years, Social Security has guaranteed the future of all hard-working Americans – in old age, in disability, in surviving the loss of a loved one. It is the essential promise that in our great country, a future of security and dignity will be there for every family. It is a sacred guarantee that has protected the retirements and the independence of millions and millions of Americans through the decades. Social Security represents not only security for our seniors, but opportunity for every generation.
