The Port serves multiple economic and strategic purposes, including significant maritime, recreational, industrial and commercial activities. The Port consists of maritime and cargo and passenger terminals, power plants, petroleum-vessel anchorages, and a Maritime Administration berth and shipyard facilities.
"Given its location in the City of San Francisco -- a world-renowned American city, financial and technology hub, and preeminent tourist destination -- the Port is a possible target for terrorist-related activity," Pelosi wrote in a letter in April to Transportation Secretary Norman Mineta, urging him to award the grant.
"I'm pleased that the Port will receive this valuable funding," Pelosi said. "It is critical that security studies are conducted to secure the area and protect the residents of San Francisco."
The grant to the Port of San Francisco is one of 51 grants, totaling $92.3 million, that are being awarded by the Department of Transportation to enhance the security of ports and other facilities across the nation.
