Pelosi Traveling to Normandy to Commemorate 80th Anniversary of D-Day Landings
Washington, D.C. – Speaker Emerita Nancy Pelosi is joining a bipartisan Congressional delegation headed to Normandy, France, to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the D-Day landings, which occurred on June 6, 1944.
"June 6th will forever mark an unsurpassed act of heroism in human history,” Speaker Emerita Pelosi said. “Eighty years ago, under the leadership of Supreme Commander of the Allied Expeditionary Force Dwight Eisenhower, tens of thousands of young American and Allied soldiers landed on the beaches of Normandy, determined to free Europe from the grasp of Nazi dictatorship. Through unimaginable courage and sacrifice on the battlefield, these heroes launched the Allied Forces to victory in the fight against fascism — and earned the gratitude of generations. Each year on D-Day, we solemnly remember the staggering cost of freedom and democracy.”
Pelosi continued: “It is with overwhelming pride and patriotism that I join President Biden and a bipartisan Congressional delegation to commemorate D-Day, to be with the valiant veterans who fought there, and to reaffirm America's longstanding leadership in securing the blessing of peace. On this day, and every day, we rekindle our commitment to preserving the flame of freedom in our time — as we strive to build a future worthy of the service and sacrifice the D-Day heroes brought to the Normandy shores."
In a January 2024 letter to Speaker Mike Johnson, Speaker Emerita Pelosi urged House Republican Leadership to change the Congressional calendar to allow for Members to travel to Normandy and appropriately commemorate the anniversary. House Republican Leadership announced on April 10th that votes would be canceled on June 6th to accommodate Member travel to Normandy.
