Pelosi Statement on Senate Republicans Blocking Protections for Contraception

Washington, D.C. – Speaker Emerita Nancy Pelosi issued this statement after Senate Republicans blocked the bipartisan Right to Contraception Act:

“Today, Senate Republicans should hang their heads in shame as their extremist colleagues blocked legislation that would enshrine access to contraception for every American, everywhere.  Because of the GOP and its allies on the Supreme Court, radical right-wing state legislators are free to escalate their campaign to diminish women’s privacy, health and freedom.

“Republican opposition should come as no surprise.  When House Democrats passed the Right to Contraception Act in 2022, 195 Republicans voted no while just eight Republicans voted yes.

“Make no mistake: Republicans’ vote against birth control is a vote for controlling women.  Democrats will always fight alongside women for their fundamental freedom to determine the future of their families.”
