Washington, D.C. – Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi today released the following statement in commemoration of World AIDS Day on December 1:

"Each World AIDS Day, the international community reflects on our progress and reaffirms our determination to banish AIDS to the annals of history. Achieving an AIDS-free generation requires our relentless, energetic and undaunted commitment to testing, treatment and finding a cure. This World AIDS Day's theme, ‘The Time to Act is Now' challenges us to act with the urgency that this global epidemic demands.

"Three decades ago, we did not know that the search for a cure would be so elusive; but, even as we have gone from attending two funerals a day to attending weddings and retirement celebrations for our friends living with HIV/AIDS, the quest for a cure continues. Our fight remains urgent – for the millions of families around the world affected by this epidemic and for our shared future. AIDS is a resourceful disease, ever mutating to escape our destruction, but we can achieve victory.

"This year, as we commemorate the 25th anniversary of the Ryan White Act, we must continue to make investments, create hope, and save lives. In memory of the friends, loved ones, and all lost to AIDS, let us strive to confront this crisis together. Let us move closer toward new discoveries, new prevention methods, and the day when we stop this disease for all time."
