Pelosi Statement on the Reintroduction of the Paycheck Fairness Act

March 25, 2015
Washington, D.C. – Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement today after Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro introduced the reauthorization of the Paycheck Fairness Act:
"Businesses, families, workers, and our economy benefit when all employees earn an honest day's pay for a full day's work, regardless of gender. Yet, women in the United States are currently earning only 78 cents, on average, for every dollar earned by men – while African American women earn 64 cents and Latinas make a staggering 56 cents for every dollar a man makes. Pay discrimination isn't right, it isn't fair, and it isn't how we create a robust economy. Today, under the leadership of Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro, House Democrats are again taking the lead in addressing one of the most pressing economic challenges confronting our country by re-introducing the Paycheck Fairness Act.
"The Paycheck Fairness Act, a pillar of House Democrats' ‘When Women Succeed, America Succeeds' economic agenda for women and families, is fundamental to creating a vibrant economy that works for everybody. Although Republicans have consistently voted against this measure, the promise of equal pay for equal work should not be a partisan issue. This is about commonsense, fairness, equality, and helping hard-working Americans.
"Securing a fair shot for women in the workplace is critical to ensuring prosperity for our nation. Rather than continue their cycle of obstruction and dysfunction, House Republicans should join with us to close the gender wage gap so we can provide bigger paychecks and better infrastructure for all Americans."
