Washington, D.C. – Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement today after President Obama issued a disaster declaration for California's Rim Fire, ensuring necessary support for ecological and infrastructure recovery. Leader Pelosi had written the President in support of the declaration.
"Earlier this year, California residents were forced to watch as savage flames raced across Stanislaus National Forest and Yosemite National Park, imperiling nearby communities. Burning through more than 250,000 acres over 69 days, the California Rim Fire became the third largest wildfire in the history of the state.
"In offering a Presidential Disaster Declaration for the Rim Fire, President Obama is lending much-needed support to Californians who continue to recover from the damage. With these critical resources, state and local officials can ensure the security and integrity of the roads, bridges, and power systems on which millions of people in the greater Bay Area rely.
"The President is to be commended for his leadership in assisting California communities to rebuild after this terrible fire. His support, along with the extraordinary leadership of Governor Jerry Brown and the unequalled courage of the 5,000 firefighters who braved the blaze, has been indispensable to effectively responding to this disaster and ensuring a strong and steady recovery. Moving forward, Congress stands ready to support every effort to protect and support every resident affected by the wildfire."
