Pelosi Statement on the Persian New Year

Washington, D.C. – Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement today to mark Nowruz, the Persian New Year:

“With the arrival of spring comes the celebration of Nowruz – a new year, a new start, a new opportunity for Iranian Americans and families around the world to cherish their heritage and culture, reflect on the past year, and move forward to a time of health and happiness in the year ahead.

“The United States is blessed each day by the leadership and contributions of our thriving Iranian community. Fleeing persecution, Iranian Americans found a home and a land of opportunity. Seeking security for their families, Iranian Americans embraced the American promise of pluralism and the belief that perseverance can yield progress and prosperity. Discovering a country strengthened by our diversity and by generations of immigrants, Iranian Americans have made their mark in business and law, in government and education, in medicine, research, and the arts.

“It is our hope that this Nowruz ushers in a period of peace and cooperation between the United States and Iran. With ongoing negotiations between our two countries, with a new President in Iran, there is a possibility for progress, for a new beginning, and for an era of partnership – as long as Iran’s leaders uphold their international obligations, abandon the path of isolation, pursue a peaceful future, and respect the dignity and rights of their citizens.
