Washington, D.C. – Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement today after the Department of Labor announced that the economy added a total of 156,000 jobs in September, with 167,000 private sector jobs being added in the month. The economy has added a total of 15.3 million private sector jobs since early 2010.

“September's jobs report shows our economy continues to move forward. However, it also clearly shows that Congress must do more to create good-paying jobs and increase the paychecks of hard-working Americans across the nation.

“House Republicans have spent this entire Congress putting their special interest agenda ahead of the needs of hard-working families. Republicans advanced giveaways for Wall Street but blocked vital action to grow the paychecks of American workers. Republicans pushed tax breaks for the wealthiest but refused to raise the minimum wage or lift the burden of student debt that weighs on millions of young Americans. Instead of strengthening and expanding Social Security, Republicans voted to eliminate the Medicare guarantee and make seniors pay more.

“Democrats are proudly fighting for a Stronger America with an economy that works for everyone. House Republicans will have to justify the conduct of the Republican Congress to the hard-working families whose needs they have neglected and ignored.”
