Washington, D.C. – Democratic Leader released the following statement ahead of the expected introduction of a veterans omnibus in the Senate, opposing a proposed provision to cut in half the housing stipend for dependents of veterans pursuing degrees through the Post-9/11 GI Bill:

“Six years ago, the Democratic Congress enacted the Post-9/11 GI Bill and restored the promise of a full, four-year college education for our heroic veterans and their families.  A key part of that promise was the guarantee that we would help veterans with children pay for their housing – so that veterans wouldn’t have to choose between paying the rent and investing in their education.

“We must not ransack the Post-9/11 GI bill and make it harder for veterans and their families to afford a place to live or pursue a higher education.  We cannot make progress strengthening the VA and supporting our veterans by pulling the rug out from under their families at the same time.

“Our veterans risked everything to serve our country.  The least we can do is help keep a roof over their children’s heads while they pursue their college degree.”
