Washington, D.C. – Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement after the White House announced President Obama and Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe will visit Pearl Harbor. Before President Obama visited the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park earlier this year, Pelosi was the highest-ranking American official to have visited Hiroshima.

“Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe’s visit to Hawaii seventy-five years after the attack on Pearl Harbor exemplifies the strength of the U.S.-Japan friendship and strategic partnership.

“Both President Obama’s visit to the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park and Prime Minister Abe’s visit to Hawaii underscore our shared resolve to strengthen global peace, security, and stability.

“This demonstration of strong leadership – and our nations’ commitment to non-proliferation – highlight the bold, principled approach needed to create a better, safer world for all.”
