San Francisco – Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement after President Trump said he had reached an "understanding" with Mexico in ongoing trade negotiations:

"Globalization is a fact of life, for better or worse, for workers worldwide. Every trade agreement we enter into must be judged by its impact on the wages, the working conditions and the well-being of hard-working Americans. Fixing NAFTA means increasing the paychecks of American workers and farmers.

"The announcement by the Trump Administration is incomplete as it reduces a trilateral agreement to a bilateral agreement, excluding Canada. The President appears to be threatening Canada with auto tariffs if they do not sign on to the U.S.-Mexico agreement. Is it because President Trump is reluctant to include Canada's recognition of the relationship between commerce and climate? Is President Trump fearful of Canada's language including women and girls in long-term economic development?

"If this agreement is a work in progress, hopefully it will produce real progress, not fake public relations. American workers don't need NAFTA with a new name. While I am ever hopeful of a successful trade agreement, the Trump Administration has a very poor record when it comes to truly delivering substantive progress after claiming breakthroughs with other nations.

"The devil is always in the details. Congress will have to closely review the text of any new trade agreement to assess the specifics behind the Administration's promises."
