San Francisco – Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement after the President's remarks on the recent advances by militant groups in Iraq:

"The President has made clear the situation in Iraq is not one that can be solved without its leaders demonstrating a willingness to make hard decisions and compromises to bring their country together. First and foremost, Iraq's leaders must step up and work with all Iraqis to overcome the sectarian differences that are crippling their country. They must do more to strengthen the capacity and the morale of Iraq's security forces, and ensure these forces hold true to their duty to the Iraqi people. Taking these actions is the only way to achieve lasting security, stability and prosperity for all the people of Iraq.

"I was pleased by the President's assurances that he will not send U.S. troops back into combat in Iraq. Congress looks forward to receiving additional intelligence and information regarding the military, humanitarian and other support options being considered by the Administration."
