Washington, D.C. – Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement tonight after President Obama delivered his State of the Union address to a Joint Session of Congress:

"Tonight, President Obama spoke directly to the highest aspirations of the American people by defining a vision of opportunity and optimism for our future. His initiatives will build an economy that works for everyone. His pledge of a year of action must be met with a firm promise of partnership in Congress. House Democrats stand ready to do our part.

"The President's address focused on one of the core challenges facing our economy today: closing the opportunity gap. To meet this challenge, we agree that it is long past time to secure universal pre-K for our children, make college more affordable for our students, and raise the minimum wage for our workers. It is time to empower women in the workforce – because when women succeed, America succeeds. It is time to work in a bipartisan way to uphold our values and enact comprehensive immigration reform.

"Our country has come a long way in the past five years, with businesses creating 8 million new jobs over the past 46 months. Yet there's still far more work to do to create jobs and strengthen the middle class. It is up to all of us to work together to reignite the American Dream and build ladders of opportunity for all."
