Washington, D.C. – Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement on the death of gun-violence prevention advocate and former White House Press Secretary James Brady:

"Our country is safer, and our communities are more secure because of James Brady. After he was shot during the attempt on President Reagan's life, Jim and his wife Sarah vowed to take a stand on behalf of all victims of gun violence. Their courage called our nation to action against the tragedy of gun violence – and their determined leadership has saved countless lives.

"This year marks the 20th anniversary of the landmark Brady Handgun Violence Prevention Act taking effect. The criminal background checks Jim and Sarah championed have blocked felons attempting to purchase guns more than a million times, including almost 300,000 domestic violence offenders.

"Jim Brady leaves us a challenge to never stop fighting for the common sense gun violence reduction measures we know we need. He was man of extraordinary wit, charm and courage, and he will be sorely missed by all who had the good fortune to know him. We hope it is a comfort to Sarah and the rest of the Brady family that so many share in their sadness at this difficult time."
