August 5, 2015

Washington, D.C. – Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement today on President Obama's nomination of former Congressman Patrick Murphy of Pennsylvania, the first Iraq War Veteran to serve in the Congress, to serve as the next Under Secretary of the United States Army:

"Patrick Murphy's dedicated public service as a soldier in Iraq and as a member of the House Intelligence Committee and Armed Services Committee in the U.S. Congress exemplifies his boundless commitment to carrying forward the banner of freedom and democracy.

"As the lead sponsor of our successful effort to repeal the discriminatory β€˜Don't Ask, Don't Tell', Congressman Murphy's strong and focused leadership was integral in ensuring all our servicemembers can serve the nation they love with the dignity they deserve.

"We are proud of Congressman Murphy's bold leadership in the Congress and his continued advocacy for servicemembers and veterans. We know that he will bring the same passionate, forward-looking leadership as the next Under Secretary of the United States Army. When confirmed, this former U.S. Army ROTC cadet, proud U.S. Army captain, and dedicated Congressman will again serve his country with unparalleled courage and unwavering commitment."
