Pelosi Statement on New Overtime Pay Protections

Washington, D.C. – Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement after the Department of Labor released its final rule to update and expand federal overtime pay protections to 4.2 million American workers across the country:

“The final overtime rule is a monumental victory that will resound in the paychecks of millions of hard-working Americans for years to come. By renewing this fundamental protection for working people, our nation has taken a big step toward ensuring that wages honor the long hard hours Americans dedicate to their jobs.

“For too long, too many Americans across the country have been asked to work longer hours only to see their pay stay the same. With the input of over 270,000 public comments, the Administration’s transformative rule will give more than four million Americans the bigger paychecks their hard work deserves – and reaffirm the 40 hour work-week that is the cornerstone of middle-class life in America.

“The bold leadership of the Administration to strengthen workers and lift wages stands in sharp contrast to the Republican Congress’s relentless efforts to stack the deck for the special interests and undermine working families. House Democrats will continue to push for legislation that will create good paying jobs, grow paychecks, and empower hard-working people in our country.”
