Washington, D.C. – Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement today after the Department of Labor announced that the economy added 209,000 jobs. With businesses adding 198,000 jobs, this marks the 53rd consecutive month of private sector job growth:

"Our economy continues to make progress. Yet with many Americans still out of work and middle class families struggling, it is clear Congress must act to jumpstart the middle class and build an economy that works for everyone – not just the wealthy and well-connected.

"Republicans' special interest priorities are stacking the deck for the privileged few and costing our country jobs. House Republicans have found the time to write themselves a blank check of taxpayer money to sue the President, but they cannot find the time for legislation to create jobs. Republicans are threatening to make it harder for our businesses to export American goods, but they continue to protect tax breaks for corporations offshoring American jobs. They will leave Washington refusing to raise the minimum wage, blocking emergency unemployment insurance, denying America's women the fairness of equal pay for equal work, and ignoring millions of young people crushed beneath student loan debt.

"The American people have had enough of House Republicans' relentless dysfunction and obstruction. It is time for a new way. Republicans should abandon their special interest agenda and come together with Democrats to create jobs, raise new ladders of opportunity, and reignite the American Dream."
