San Francisco – Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement today after the Department of Labor announced that the economy added 151,000 jobs in January and the unemployment rate fell to 4.9 percent. With businesses adding 158,000 jobs last month, January represents the 71st consecutive month of private sector job growth:

"Our economy continues to make progress – reaching the lowest unemployment rate since February 2008. Yet more must be done to grow Americans' paychecks and strengthen our economy.

“Congress should be working to create more good-paying jobs and to raise the wages of hard-working families. However, after another month wasted on their recycled special interest agenda, it is clear that the Republican Congress has no ideas and no interest in creating jobs or raising wages.

“While Republicans continue to attack women’s health care and empower the wealthy and well-connected at the expense of everyone else, Democrats will be working to create jobs, grow our economy and increase the paychecks of America’s working families.”
