Washington, D.C. – Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement in honor of Hispanic Heritage Month, which starts on Monday, September 15:

"Each Hispanic Heritage Month, we recognize our Latino community's contributions to our country and our history – and honor the many ways in which Latinos and Latinas in all walks of life have made America more American.

"Whether by serving in our armed forces, competing in the Olympics, getting elected to Congress as far back as the 19th century or exceling in the arts, sciences, education, business, government, and philanthropy, Hispanic Americans have contributed to our shared history for generations.

"This month, we also move beyond history to build on new possibilities and create a more vibrant, innovative, and welcoming nation. Now is the time for Republicans in Congress, who continue to deny our country the clear economic benefits from immigration reform, to bring up for a vote in the U.S. House of Representatives comprehensive legislation that secures our borders, protects our workers, unites our families, reduces the deficit, and provides a pathway to citizenship for millions of immigrants who contribute to our country but who are forced to live under the shadows. The American people deserve nothing less."
