Washington, D.C. – Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement after House Republicans passed a resolution, by a vote of 234 to 181, to allot an additional $800,000 for the work of the Republicans’ Select Panel to Attack Women’s Health through December 31, 2016, bringing the total for the panel to $1.5 million, repaying the Energy and Commerce Committee for the money the panel has already spent:
“Republicans’ Select Panel to Attack Women’s Health has always been a highly partisan witch hunt aimed at undermining women’s health care and life-saving medical research. Now that House Republicans are shifting resources to fund an additional $800,000 in taxpayer dollars on their unending assault on women’s health, the total squandered on this partisan witchhunt is now more than $1.5 million.
“From day one, Republicans have been engaged in a shameless campaign of intimidation and distortion of the truth. Republicans on this Select Panel have consistently refused to work with Democrats. Its Chair Marsha Blackburn has issued 42 unilateral subpoenas, including 35 sent without any effort to seek voluntary compliance, and all sent in violation of House rules that require notice and consultation with the minority, as part of Republicans’ effort to hound medical researchers out of conducting lifesaving research.
“The Select Panel’s contempt for the truth and dangerous disregard for safety is putting lives in danger and having a chilling effect on life-saving research. Rather than throw away more resources on their unending attack on women’s health care, House Republicans should listen to the American people and disband this abusive Select Panel immediately.”
