Washington, D.C. – Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement after California Governor Jerry Brown signed the Transparency and Responsibility Using State Tools (TRUST) Act and other immigration reforms into law today:
“Today, Governor Jerry Brown signed his name to legislation that honors our history and upholds our heritage as a nation of immigrants. By enacting the TRUST Act, California is protecting its communities, ensuring effective law enforcement, and, once again, leading by example.
“Authored by San Francisco’s Assemblyman Tom Ammiano, the TRUST Act restores public trust and promotes public safety by ensuring immigrants aren’t afraid to work with local law enforcement officials out of fear of their immigration status. These reforms, along with the law approving drivers’ licenses for undocumented immigrants, reflect a significant step forward in the path to fixing our broken immigration system. House Democrats have taken the next step by introducing legislation to secure our borders, protect our workers, unite our families, and provide an earned pathway to citizenship – the core principles of commonsense comprehensive immigration reform.
“From generation to generation, immigrants have built, strengthened, and enriched our culture and our society. They have reinvigorated our economy. Every immigrant who reaches our shores with that determination and optimism makes America more American. That tradition is embedded into the very fabric of American strength. Now is the time to honor that tradition, to build on California’s progress, and to ensure that the American Dream remains within reach for every immigrant who hopes to build a brighter future on our shores. Now is the time for comprehensive immigration reform.”
