Washington, D.C. – Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement today after the Department of Labor announced that the economy added a total of 156,000 jobs in December. With 144,000 private sector jobs being added in December, the economy has added a total of 15.8 million private sector jobs since early 2010.

"The economy continues to move forward, but December's jobs report reiterates the need for Congress to come together and take bold action to create more good-paying jobs.

"House Democrats believe Congress should be working every day to raise wages and create good-paying jobs for everyone, everywhere in America. Instead, Republicans have spent the first week of the new Congress stacking the deck for the special interests and plotting to Make America Sick Again by destroying the Medicare guarantee, raising premiums and ripping health coverage away from 30 million Americans. The GOP continues to deny the reality that repealing the Affordable Care Act would have devastating consequences for the health and economic security of America's hard-working families, including the loss of roughly 2.6 million jobs around the nation.

"While Republicans fight for the special interests, House Democrats will work tirelessly to ensure that all hard-working Americans have the opportunity to buy a home, address the aspirations of their children, and retire with dignity. We will continue to press for a bipartisan robust, infrastructure plan that will create good-paying jobs in all America's communities."
