Washington, D.C. – House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi today released this statement following reports that more than 100 LGBT Chechnyans have been disappeared, with at least three men being tortured to death for being perceived to be LGBT:
“Every person deserves to be who they are and love who they love without fear of violence. Following numerous anti-LGBT statements, laws, and acts against LGBT people throughout Putin’s Russia, at least 100 men have been disappeared simply for being perceived to be gay. These disappearances, including brutal torture and murder, deserve universal condemnation.
“Violence against LGBT people throughout Putin’s Russia remains an outrage against humanity. The Chechnyan government’s barbaric torture, imprisonment, and murder of LGBT people are outside the circle of civilized behavior. The global community has a moral responsibility to speak out against the rampant, systemic violence against LGBT people throughout the Russian Federation.
“The United States must continue to demand that the Putin-empowered Chechnyan leadership stop these vile abuses of LGBT people. Every person deserves dignity and equality, no matter who they are or who they love.”
