Washington, D.C. – Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement after the White House announced the Administration is requesting an emergency supplemental funding package to help address the Zika virus:

“The spread of the Zika virus requires a robust, proactive U.S. response to protect American communities and combat this disease across our hemisphere. Congress should swiftly approve the emergency resources to accelerate and strengthen our response to Zika’s distressing spread.

“Our fellow Americans in Puerto Rico are already on the front lines of the Zika epidemic. We must provide sufficient Medicaid resources for the children and pregnant women in Puerto Rico facing this crisis.

“As we prepare for the emerging threat of Zika, we must also address the man-made catastrophe that continues to shadow the children of Flint. We have a moral responsibility to be there for the thousands of children who have already been exposed to unconscionable levels of lead. Funding to address the crisis in Flint should be added to this emergency supplemental bill.”
