Pelosi Statement on the Inauguration of President-elect Lai Ching-te of Taiwan

San Francisco – Speaker Emerita Nancy Pelosi issued this statement after the inauguration of President-elect Lai Ching-te of Taiwan:

“The many friends of Taiwan in the United States Congress send congratulations to President Lai Ching-te on his inauguration.  Former President Tsai Ing-wen is to be lauded for her distinguished and barrier-breaking public service, marked by her commitment to security, prosperity and human dignity.

“With its inauguration proceedings, Taiwan demonstrated the strength and vibrancy of its democracy.  All freedom-loving people have been inspired by the courage of the people of Taiwan, who through the peaceful transfer of power proudly reaffirm their commitment to a free, open, democratic society.

“As Beijing continues its campaign of aggression against Taiwan, the United States Congress remains unwavering in its bipartisan, bicameral commitment to supporting democracy in Taiwan.”
