Washington, D.C. – Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement on a bipartisan bicameral amicus brief of 208 Members and Former Members of Congress in the case of West Virginia v. EPA, currently before the D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals.

“Today, 208 past and present Members of Congress from both parties are calling on the Court to reject the latest Republican special interest attempt to dismantle any limits on the carbon polluters that are choking our skies and accelerating the climate crisis.

“The Clean Air Act was written precisely to empower the Environmental Protection Agency to take bold, urgent action to combat pollution that threatens the health of our communities and the future of our planet.  In the face of record droughts, climbing asthma rates and surging oceans, there can be no question: the damage of carbon pollution jeopardizes the health of our children, the strength of our economy and the security of our nation.

“We cannot afford more willful blindness to the reality of the climate crisis and the danger of carbon pollution.  With the landmark Paris Climate Accord, over 150 nations have pledged historic action to secure our future – and the Clean Power Plan represents a historic promise to preserve the planet for future generations.  We are confident that the Clean Power Plan will be upheld so we can move forward with this vital plan to protect the health and safety of communities across the country.”
