Washington, D.C. - House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement today in honor of our nation's veterans and soldiers as the country prepares to celebrate Memorial Day on Monday, May 30th.

"This Memorial Day, our nation will come together to honor some of our greatest heroes, those who made the ultimate sacrifice for our country. They were sons and daughters, husbands and wives, fathers and mothers, and they gave their lives for us. We share the grief of those who were left behind. We are not just the beneficiaries of their bravery, we are the stewards of their sacrifice.

"As we celebrate Memorial Day this weekend, the thoughts and prayers of all Americans will be with the families who have lost a loved one. We pray this year in particular that our soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan will return to the loving arms of their families.

"This year, as a nation, our resolve must be to let their service renew our mission to build a future worthy of their sacrifice. That begins with taking care of those who have defended our country yesterday and today. House Democrats have introduced the new GI Bill of Rights for the 21st Century, a comprehensive package to improve benefits for our men and women in uniform today, and provide long overdue benefits for the veterans and military retirees who have already served.

"On the battlefield it is the soldiers pledge to leave no one behind, it must be the pledge of all Americans to leave no veteran behind. They have earned no less."
