Washington, D.C. â€" House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi announced today a grant of $5.35 million to San Francisco Muni to develop and demonstrate a 40-foot hybrid fuel cell bus.
The Department of Transportation grant was awarded to California-based WestStart-CALSTART, who will partner in the project with the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency, among others.
â€Å"These funds will allow us to explore new ways to make alternative fuels-based technology a viable reality for our mass transit needs,†Pelosi said. â€Å"Projects like these not only increase air quality, but also reduce our dependence on foreign oil.â€Â
As part of the New Direction for America, Democrats are fighting to free America from dependence on foreign oil and create a cleaner environment with initiatives for energy-efficient technologies and domestic alternatives such as biofuels.
