Washington, D.C. â€" House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi announced today a grant of $5.35 million to San Francisco Muni to develop and demonstrate a 40-foot hybrid fuel cell bus.

The Department of Transportation grant was awarded to California-based WestStart-CALSTART, who will partner in the project with the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency, among others.

â€Å"These funds will allow us to explore new ways to make alternative fuels-based technology a viable reality for our mass transit needs,” Pelosi said. â€Å"Projects like these not only increase air quality, but also reduce our dependence on foreign oil.”

As part of the New Direction for America, Democrats are fighting to free America from dependence on foreign oil and create a cleaner environment with initiatives for energy-efficient technologies and domestic alternatives such as biofuels.
