Washington, D.C. – Speaker Nancy Pelosi today issued the following statement after the United Nations Security Council voted 12 to 2 to impose a new round of comprehensive sanctions on Iran:
"Today, the United Nations presented a clear choice to the government of Iran: suspend its nuclear program and rejoin the community of nations as a partner in peace and security; or continue to defy calls for diplomacy and engagement, and face comprehensive sanctions. Behind President Obama’s leadership, this vote answers Iran’s intransigence with tangible consequences, and meets Iran’s threats with responsible action.
"The U.S. Congress stands with the President Obama and the UN Security Council in its drive to condemn Iran and advance the cause of non-proliferation in the Middle East and across the globe. A nuclear Iran is simply unacceptable, and Congress will soon move forward on Iran sanctions legislation targeted at Iran’s petroleum industry.
"Iran’s nuclear program is a challenge to the United States, the region, and the world, and we must use every tool at our disposal – from diplomacy to sanctions – to halt Iran’s march toward nuclear capability."
