How Can I Help You?
Having trouble with a federal agency or obtaining your federal benefits? Here are a few examples of how my San Francisco office may be able to assist you:
  • My office was able to assist a constituent who requires a motorized wheelchair to attend her classes at San Francisco State University. Her old motorized wheelchair broke, and the model is no longer manufactured. She applied for a replacement through the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), but her request was denied. My staff consulted with CMS and identified the necessary corrections on her application. After these corrections were made and resubmitted to CMS, my constituent was approved for a replacement wheelchair.
  • Another constituent, who is a veteran, submitted a claim to the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) in September 2011, but had not received a response from the VA since submitting her claim. After discussing this matter with a Veterans Service Organization, it was suggested that she contact my office. My staff was able to discuss her case with the VA Regional Office and a favorable decision on her claim was granted within a month.
  • A constituent filed for spousal benefits from the Social Security Administration (SSA) in 2009 and was denied because of the discriminatory Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA). He appealed this decision, which has been pending before the Appeals Council since 2012. After contacting my office, the Appeals Council determined that his situation warranted expeditious handling and it is now moving through the appeals system.
